Fundraising.

All over the world there are people who need charity. Not everyone is as fortunate as you and I. It is therefore important for us to help out where we can and offer other countries or indeed people within our own country support.

When people think of charity they may initially think about donations but this is not the only way for you to do your bit. Over the years it has become clear that a really good way to get money for a charity is via fundraising. In basic terms fundraising is when you gather money or sometimes other resources, by asking people to donate money. There are lots of different ways to do this.

Holding an event is a way of having fun but at the same time gathering up money for a cause. This is just what Richard Moody organises. He is the kind of guy that can put on events for charities and pull in some big names. For example if he held a fashion show, it wouldn’t be surprising if people from designer labels or from my-wardrobe.com came. He knows people in all industries which is really helpful when it comes to raising awareness.

You just have to look at an event like Live aid in 1985. Bob Geldof and Midge Ure put on a massive concert in order to raise funds for Ehtiopian famine. It was what was known as a dual venue concert because the event was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, England, United Kingdom (attended by 72,000 people) and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (attended by about 99,000 people). This of course an event on a really large scale but it just goes to show how well the idea works and why people turn to Richard Moody to help them with their events.

Best-selling author Garth Stein to headline

Home For Life’s fall gala

The annual fundraiser at The Metropolitan, Golden Valley, features a catered dinner, silent auction and parade of animals. During a recent interview, Stein commented on his career, his best-selling book, his new project and Home For Life’s mission.

Author Garth Stein will be the guest speaker at Home For Life’s Fall Feast on November 11. Stein’s book, “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 118 weeks and has been published in 30 languages.

Home for Life, an animal sanctuary near Stillwater, Minn., is home to over 300 dogs, cats and other animals that are unadoptable due to illness or age. Home For Life offers animals a “third door,” an alternative to adoption or euthanasia, by providing a loving, lifetime home.

Home For Life’s Fall Feast, the annual fundraiser, will be held at The Metropolitan Ballroom in Golden Valley, beginning at 6:00 p.m. In addition to Stein’s keynote address, the evening will feature many memorable treats: a buffet dinner created by the chefs at D’Amico Catering; Z Wines from South Africa; a hosted vodka martini luge; a silent and live auction with extravagant prizes; and guest appearances from several Home For life animals. Tickets are $100 for an individual seat or $1,000 for a 10-person table. Order tickets in advance from https://secure18.visi.com/homeforlife.org/eventform.php, or send an email to info@homeforlife.org, or call 800-252-5918. Tickets will not be available at the door.

During a recent interview, Stein shared his thoughts on his successful career, his best-selling book, his new project and the mission of Home For Life:

Writing career: Stein always intended to be a writer, but he took a detour first. “I thought being a writer might be irresponsible. Starting salaries for novelists are extremely low. Instead, I went to film school to study screenwriting, found documentary films and did those for nine years. When I talk to high school students, I tell them we’re always running, running, running, but we need to take detours when they come. We’ll get back on track if we’re meant to get back on track. I was 32 when my first book was published; I went on a long detour.”

Stein launched his writing career with his first novel Raven Stole the Moon, about a young mother who travels to Alaska to learn the truth about her son’s disappearance and her own past. His second novel, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets, won a Pacific Northwest Bookseller Award.

Current project: “I tend to gravitate toward family dramas and the ongoing spiritual quest we’re all a part of,” said Stein. His current book is a family saga about the Pacific Northwest that takes place over 130 years. “The book follows a character that is alive at the beginning of the book, dies during the book yet continues living. So it’s also a ghost story. The idea was inspired by a play I had written called Brother Jones.”

Best-selling book: Stein’s third novel The Art of Racing in the Rain, follows the heart-wrenching but ultimately uplifting story of Denny and his wife Eve’s battle against cancer, as told by the family’s dog, Enzo. “One of the reasons it was fun writing Racing in the Rain was because it had this character, the narrator, who is sort of compelling, and so earnest in his assessments, even if they were wrong. I never thought I wanted to write about the racing world; what’s interesting is making it applicable to our daily lives.”

In the book, Stein struck a delicate balance of humor and tragedy. “I could bring humor into it, and I think that’s where the balance was. If we lived in a flat world, it would be a dull place. We need our mountains and we need our valleys so we can have our highs and our lows.”

Home For Life’s mission: Stein’s keynote speech at this year’s Fall Feast will touch on Home For Life’s mission, the relationship we have with our pets and what we can learn from those relationships. “I think Home For Life’s approach is a wonderful approach, but it’s also a difficult approach that takes a lot of energy, dedication and love. It also takes a lot of people making it happen. You need that passion to do it. The plight of homeless animals is, unfortunately, part of our world. What can we do except try to tamp it down and educate people and get to a point where the culture understands the problem and actively tries to eliminate it.”

About Home for Life, The Animal Sanctuary of the St. Croix Valley

A not-for-profit animal sanctuary, Home for Life provides loving, lifetime care for dogs and cats that can lead quality lives but are unable to find homes due to old age, disabilities or medical or behavioral issues. The animals, including retired service dogs, come from across the U.S. and worldwide. Home for Life is dedicated to giving its residents a home, not a warehoused existence. Home for Life animals live on 40 acres in Star Prairie, Wisconsin and are cared for by a trained and dedicated 24-hour staff.
